English Etymology
From Latin 'index' (genitive 'indicis') meaning 'forefinger, informer, sign, list', from 'indicare' 'to point out, indicate'. The sense 'alphabetical list' dates from the late 16th century.
Hurdu Etymology
Latin lafz 'index' (jis ka genitive 'indicis' hai) se aaya hai, jis ka matlab 'shahadat ki ungli, khabar dene wala, nishan, fehrist' hai. Yeh 'indicare' se nikla hai jis ka matlab 'ishara karna, nishan-dahi karna' hai. 'Alphabetical list' ka matlab 16th sadi ke akhir se raaij hua.

لاطینی لفظ 'index' (جس کا جینیٹو 'indicis' ہے) سے آیا ہے، جس کا مطلب 'شہادت کی انگلی، خبر دینے والا، نشان، فہرست' ہے۔ یہ 'indicare' سے نکلا ہے جس کا مطلب 'اشارہ کرنا، نشان دہی کرنا' ہے۔ 'الفابیٹیکل لسٹ' کا مطلب 16ویں صدی کے آخر سے رائج ہوا۔
